THE WAGON WHEEL WANDERER

March, 2010 Newsletter

What a surprise.  The weather was down right miserable on Saturday, Feb 20th but we had 13 rigs represented and a guest speaker showed up too.

Alvin and Cindy Banghart hosted our pot luck dinner at Robidoux Park.  Thanks Cindy and Alvin.  After dinner Cindy had invited a guest to give us a talk.  Capt. Jason Rogers of the Gering Police Dept. gave a very interesting talk about Special Olympics and the annual torch run. We all learned about how the torch run works and what the future changes will be when and if Scottsbluff and Gering Police Depts. merge.  Many thanks to Cindy and Jason.

After Jason finished we had our monthly meeting.  There were no bills this month, so Jim left the check book in his brief case.  Bobbie Baird reported that Tom McCarthy’s brother passed away.  Char reported that Bart Bartow has pneumonia and is the hospital in Texas.  Betty Wilhelm also reported that Chuck Staton broke his leg and is in Golden Living Center.  Betty Jo Kreman is sending cards to all of them.

Carolyn Austin said that everything was set with Becky Towers to cater the Christmas party this year.  Cindy informed us that the 2009 highway clean-up check will be arriving next week.  She will fill out the paperwork so we can clean-up again this year.

The 50/50 brought in $30.00 for the club with  $15.00 each going to Carolyn Austin and Linda Vance (YE-Ha).  The door prize was won by Roy and Carolyn Austin.

The candle decorations that were supplied by our host and hostess were won by Linda and Jim Vance, Charleen Case, Betty and George Wilhelm, Bonita and Harry Case, and Shirley Vance.  Thank You Cindy and Alvin.

Elkhorn Valley Good Sams
February 13, 2010
The regular meeting of the Elkhorn Valley Sams was held on Saturday, February 13, 2010 at The Office in Hooper, NE which is a favorite local haunt with a nice party room, good food and great service. Jim Cunningham, Chaplain, led us in prayer prior to the meal. Following our meal, the meeting was opened by President, Mary Bell. Roll call was taken with 16 rigs represented. The minutes were read and approved. Larry Hintz read an email from the Lofgrens who are vacationing in Port Aransas, TX. Bud Dose read a Thank You card from Shirley Broekemeier for her gift as out-going President. Many members responded that the December Christmas Party and activities were enjoyed by all attendees, especially the Christmas carols sung by a group from Fremont HS. The meeting scheduled for January 9, 2010 was cancelled due to inclement weather.
Jan Rishoi reminded she is collecting camping fees during the meeting for the May campout at Louisville.
Linda Bontrager handed out a revised Members of Elkhorn Valley Sams 2010.
OLD BUSINESS
1.A discussion of a club cookbook was tabled until the May meeting.
2.Bauers reported that all food items donated at the December Christmas Party were subsequently taken to the Salvation Army. Bauers also indicated they have collected two buckets of can tabs for donation to the club.
3.The Audit Committee has not yet met, but will plan to do so at the April campout prior to the meeting.
NEW BUSINESS
1.Linda Bontrager handed out the March Meeting Notice which will be held at the Old Country Buffet at 144th and Center in Omaha on Saturday, March 14, 2010 at 5:30 p.m. Each person is asked to be ready to tell one “good luck” story in their life.
2.Linda Bontrager opened a brief discussion concerning our primary Elkhorn Valley Sams/Good Sams patch which is affixed to our club vests with respect to obtaining such patches, as new members join our club, and the costs for several options for doing so. The President encouraged each member to explore this topic prior to discussion at the April meeting and that the item would be tabled until that time.
3.Janet Emken asked about addition of new members. The President indicated that new members are very welcome to join our club. A possible limitation may occur occasionally on the total number of sites available for use by the club at certain camp locations.
The monthly drawing was held and the winner was the Cunninghams.
The Hosts for the evening were the Hintzs and Ruffs. Everyone enjoyed the private Party Room at the Office as well as the festive table decorations, and delicious candies, nuts and cup cakes.
Meeting adjourned.

Our January meeting was held at our usual location Robidoux RV Park after a pot luck supper hosted by Gary and Sue Shepherd.  The brown bags and treats were a hit with the 14 rigs that were there.  Thanks Gary and Sue.

The January meeting followed our meal.  With not a lot of business to take care of this time of year it went pretty fast.  Char Shanaman wants to remind everyone that there are about 40 cookbooks left to sell.  Contact her if you need some or maybe to give as a gift.  Clyde Baird brought up the idea to send the newsletter via e-mail to those with an e-mail address.  Although it would save the club some money, it was decided by those present to continue mailing the newsletter.

This year the Christmas dinner/meeting will be December 11th instead of the 18th because it works out better with everyone’s Christmas plans.  Becky Tower will again cater our Christmas dinner and Carolyn Austin has once again volunteered to contact Becky to make arrangements.  Thank you Carolyn.

President Ken Petersen went over the membership information with those that were present.  If you were not at the meeting please contact Ken so that he can bring your info up to date.

The 50/50 was won by Char Shanaman and Marilyn Petersen and the door prize was won by John and Betty Jo Kreman.

THE WA6ON WHEEL WHISTLER
.January, 2010 Newsletter
We hope you all had a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. I just want to know where 2009 went. It seems like just a few days ago we were welcoming 2009 in.
Our December meeting/Christmas dinner was at Roubidoux RV Park in Gering. Our
dinner was catered by Becky Tower with Charlene Case as our host. Thank you
Charlene. After a delicious dinner that the club paid for half we had our meeting with
15 rigs present and accounted for.
Being that it was the last meeting of 2009 we had a few housekeeping items to take care of. We decided to send Becky Tower a card to thank her for the good food. The
new officers for 2010 were sworn in by Tom McCarthy. They are Ken Petersen
- President, Marilyn Petersen - Secretary, Jim Vance - Treasurer, Alvin Banghart - Wagon Master, and Linda Vance - Newsletter Editor. Bait will be sworn in as Vice President when he gets back from sunny - warm Texas. The Treasurer’s books were audited by Twilla McCarthy and Clyde Baird. Of course everything balanced. We will have a list of the new officers at the January meeting. There was no door prize for December and the 50/50 was won by Carolyn Austin and Ken Petersen. Gary and Sue Shepherd will host the January Pot Luck Supper on the 16th Hope to see you there.
We want to thank Tom and Twilla for editing the newsletter all these years and for all the time and energy they not only put into making our club better, but also for all they
do for our community to help make it a better place for all of us.
Happy Camping

Wagon Wheel Sam’s December 2009 Newsletter

December 2nd, 2009

We met in November at the RV Park  in Gering.  A nice pot luck hosted by Dave and Sandy Feagler was enjoyed by all.  Eighteen rigs answered roll call at the meeting.  Guests were Logan and Keegan Weiss (grandsons of Gregory’s) and Kristina and Kadia (granddaughter and great granddaughter of Adamson’s).  Kathy Scott also joined us and shared some information with us on the Special Olympics program from National to State and Scottsbluff County.  The National Special Olympics competition will take place in July 2010 at Lincoln and Omaha.  The Club voted to donate $100.00 again this year to help the Knights of Columbus buy batteries for the Toys for Tots.  Tom McCarthy said that it was time to clean out the “Pop Can House” again.  A time was set up for the next Tuesday and several came to see that it was done.

Winners of the 50/50 were Sandy Feagler and Larry Adamson.  Way to go Wyoming!

Charlene Case won the door prize.

Many members have helped with the road clean up and the RV park as well as taking care of the collection and sale of the pop cans this year.  A big Thank You should go to each of you for your time and work.  It is hard to believe that we are bringing the year to an end but we know that everyone is looking forward to Spring and our 2010 campouts.

Our Christmas Party will be Saturday evening December 12th at six o’clock at Robidoux RV Park.  Charlene Case will be the Hostess,  The meal will be catered again this year.  The menu is as follows:  Ham or Chicken , potatoes, green beans, spinach salad and pumpkin dessert.  The cost of the meals is $14.00 each.  The Club voted to pay for half the cost.

We have written the monthly newsletter for several years.  It has been out pleasure to do it but we have decided it is time to let someone else take their turn.  Jim and Linda Vance have volunteered to take the responsibility.  Thank you, we know you will do a great job.  Jim did a good job this year of taking care of the publicity for  Christmas in October.  He even consented to being interviewed on television and radio.  We also want to thank Carolyn Austin and Sharon Gregory for helping us out whenever we were out of town for any extended length of time.

Merry Christmas and Happy New Year.

Elkhorn Valley Good Sams

November 14,2009

The regular meeting of the Elkhorn Valley Sams was held on Sat. Nov. 14, 2009 at The Old Scribner Hotel, Scribner, Ne., a step back in time, very cozy, and a wonderful meal was enjoyed by all. Jim Cunningham, chaplain, led us in prayer prior to the meal. Following the meal , our meeting was opened by President , Shirley Broekemeir. The Pledge of Allegiance was recited. Roll call was taken with 22 rigs represented. The minutes were read and approved as corrected. The Peterson’s anniversary celebration is Nov. 28, not the 27th.

Guests present at our meeting were Rick and Mary Coates.

No unfinished business.

Our next meeting will be Dec. 12, 5:30p.m. at the Coffee Pot Restaurant in Fremont.

New Business: Larry Hintz reported that he had spoken with Director Fred Hatch about the policies, if any, for keeping Treasurer’s reports from the past. Fred stated that there is no policy, but recommended we keep at least the past three years. Discussion was held and Mary Bell moved that we keep the past three years Treasurers reports. Moved and seconded, motion carried. All minutes will be kept. Betty Bauer includes the minutes of each meeting in our scrapbook, which is a history of the club from its beginning.

Every December the club has been giving to a charity. After a short discussion it was decided to donate food items to the Fremont Low Income Ministry pantry. Motion made, seconded and carried. Bauers and Lofgrens will be responsible for taking the items to the pantry. We also decided to not have a meeting at our Christmas party.

Janet Emken discussed the possibility of the club making a cookbook with a collection of members favorite recipes. This would be a simple cookbook, not something formally published. This was tabled for further discussion in January.

Mary Bell presented a gift to our outgoing president, Shirley Broekemeir, and thanked her for doing such a splendid job.

The monthly drawing was held with the winner being the Baers.

The hosts for the evening were Saunders, Shermans and Boyds. A door prize of two cornish hens was won by the Cunninghams. John Prell and Sharon Munger, new members, announced their engagement.

What a wonderful evening we all enjoyed. Thank you to our hosts.

Meeting adjourned.

Sharon Lofgren

November 11th, 2009

Christmas in October was celebrated at Robidoux RV Park in Gering last month.  We had cold weather and several inches of snow on the ground the weekend before so felt so thankful that the weather was beautiful.  Twelve camper braved the weather and other members came back and forth.  The decorations were beautiful and always so much fun to put up.

The meeting was held Friday evening at seven.  Twenty rigs answered roll call.  Campouts for 2010 were voted on.  They are as follows:  Jan. to April at Robicoux RV Park, May Box Butte, June Ft. Robinson, July Lusk (Rawhide Days), August Terry Bison (Cheyenne), Sept Riverside Zoo, & October to Dec. Robidoux RV Park.  Host for 2010 are as follows:  January Shepherds, Feb Bangharts, March Cases, April Gregorys, May Schreiners, June Butchers, July Bartows, Aug Walschs, Sep Jim Vances, Oct Binegars, Nov Fees, and December Schanaman.  Keep in mind that the December Christmas dinner has been moved up to the second weekend (Dec 12th).  We will need to take a count for the catering service.  If you won’t be able to attend the Nov. meeting, please let Carolyn Austin or Ken Pertersen know if you will be there in December. The door prize went to Harry and Bonita Case and the 50/50 to Marilyn Petersen and Betty Jo Kreman.

Saturday morning the coffee and rolls were ready for the bikers from ABATE,  Thanks to Northwest Pipe and Supply for furnishing the doughnuts.  The bikers met at the RV Park and started their journey to pick up the boxes of toys around town for Toys for Tots.  We had fewer bikers this year as they had another activity scheduled the same day. It was still nice to see the group that came. It is always a thrill to see them start out on their bikes with their big Santa in the truck.  Several people dropped off donations of toys and food for the pantry during the day and evening.  Thanks go to Jim Vance for furnishing his trailer for storage and hauling the donations to the KC Hall.

Dinner was hosted at noon by Roy and Carolyn Austin.  Another wonderful pot luck was enjoyed by everyone. Our guest for dinner was Kathy Gatch from the Theraputic Riding Academy.  In the evening everyone turned on their lights and headed to the club house with their cookies.  Several guests dropped by to enjoy the cookies, hot cider, coffee and hot chocolate.

Dave and Sandy Feagler are hosts for the November dinner and meeting.  It will be held at the RV Park on Saturday  November  21..  Feagler’s plan to have a pot luck dinner.   Dinner will be enjoyed at six followed by the meeting.

The Two City Sams gathered at Walnut Creek RV park near Pappillion, Ne Oct 9 thru Oct 11.  Nine units were in attendance.

Thursday the weather was very nasty.  In the evening most of the members went into LaVista to a local sports bar and had supper than stayed and watched the Nebraska/Missouri football game.

Friday was a nice sunny day.  Early in the afternoon preparations were being made for the Saturday morning meeting.  Inclement weather was forcast for Saturday.  Chapter members put up tarps to block the wind.
