2010 First Highway Clean up
Our merry group of highway clean up professionals poses for a picture after picking up trash along Five Rocks Road.
We had a good turnout for our first highway cleanup of the year. After a long, cold and wet winter we had quite a haul. Harry and Clyde used their pickups to haul the big chunks. I even saw one big lump of trash in the back of Harry’s truck that looked like Alvin Banghart.
After we finished it was time for the usual picture with Gunner guarding the pile of trash. Someone said “I’m hungry.” A few of us had Saturday morning “honey dos” and headed home. The rest of us went to the Log Cabin Restaurant for breakfast. Biscuits and Gravy was flowin’ and our bellies were growin’. I think we should change our chapter name to Let’s Eat Sams. We’ll meet again next month.
May 2010 Meeting
Ken called the meeting to order after Dave and Leroy got back from a garage sale. After roll call with 15 rigs (yes, believe it or not some of us, including your editor and treasurer wimped out and drove up in our cars) in attendance, Kathy Gatch from Buckboard Therapeutic Riding Academy gave a presentation about what they have accomplished over the last year and their plans for the future. We had voted to donate $100.00 to them and presented it afterword.
After Jim gave the Treasurer’s report that left us with a balance of $3,698.87 he read a letter from The Special Olympics thanking us for the donation.
Cindy reported that she has signed a contract to do the highway cleanup again this year. The amount is $400.00 and the first cleanup is 8:00 am, May 22nd.
Because the State Samboree is in June, we had a few housekeeping items to take care of. $10.00 was donated to Special Olympics in memorial of each family member we lost in the past year. $50.00 was donated for door prizes at the Samboree.
Jim brought up the idea that since our chapter has a large account balance that we should clear out $2,000 by making additional donations to our charities’. After much discussion on the subject Tom McCarthy suggested we give $500.00 each to Ronald McDonald House, Buckboard Therapeutic Riding Academy, Dogs for the Deaf and Special Olympics. Tom made the motion and we all approved it. Needless to say Jim was busy with the check book.
Because we are in charge of parking at the State Samboree, Denny Butcher gave a quick talk on how, when and where.
It looks like we need to decide where to have our campout in July. Alvin reports that the campground in Lusk is full for that weekend.
We had some discussion on going to Cheyenne in August. As this is when we have our elections some of us wanted it closer to home. Tom McCarthy had to remind everyone that it has been voted on and approved by a majority vote. Tom also thanked everyone for the many cards, phone calls and visits. We need to keep Tom and Sue Shepherd in our thoughts and prayers.
Because someone forgot the tickets, we did not have a 50/50 this month. We did, however, have a door prize. The door prize that was donated by Dennis and Sharon Gregory was won by Jim and Linda Vance. Thanks Dennis and Sharon. We are already enjoying the prizes.
The June campout will be at Fort Robinson with Gene and Jeannie Fees as our host with the pot luck at 12:00 noon and the meeting following at 1:00pm. We will be in the same area as last year. See you there.
