History

Rudy Strunc and Jo Pokorny contacted Good Sam members by phone on the first Sunday in February. There were 17 couples attended and listened. Before the meeting adjourned 13 couples signed up and paid dues. Rudy and Bernice Strunc attended a Good Sam chapter meeting in Omaha and so it gave us many good ideas for forming a new chapter. Since there wasn’t a chapter in Lincoln a good name had to be decided on. Fortunately, someone present suggested “Capitol Sams” and after some discussion it became the name.

We held our meetings in the Commercial Federal Savings and Loan Building in Lincoln. We discussed rules, campsites and times for our campouts over a cup of coffee. Dick Melicher was the State Director and he and his wife came to our meeting to install the officers. Rudy Strunc became the first President. Don Sampson made a drawing of the State Capitol Building and it was decided it would be made into a patch which each member would buy and sew onto the red vests worn at the meetings, campgrounds, Samborees, and church services. We put on a Samboree at the Seward City Park in 1975.
